How To Have Sustainable Skincare

Discover how to achieve a radiant natural glow through eco-friendly skincare and makeup practices that benefit your skin and the planet

We are becoming increasingly aware of our planet and the impact we have on it. Sustainable or eco-beauty is no longer a trend; it’s a need. We are increasingly aware of our choices and their impact on our environment. From the things we eat to how we travel, and ways we can reduce our carbon footprint. However, amidst all these, we often overlook one important thing: our skin.

But don’t you think that your skin deserves the same treatment as what you eat? Indeed, it absorbs many of the same toxins. We unknowingly expose our skin to numerous toxic substances in the conventional beauty products we use daily. Therefore, it’s crucial to consider the impact of our beauty choices.

To address this growing need, a new approach to beauty has emerged. It’s more than just using ‘natural‘ products. It’s a holistic approach that prioritizes ethical sourcing, clean formulations, cruelty-free practices, and minimal waste. Think of it as a green beauty movement that respects your skin and the environment. Your skin, acting as a barrier, absorbs a significant portion of what you apply. By choosing toxin-free products, we protect our skin from harmful chemicals.

This experience led me to rethink my approach to skincare and embrace sustainable practices. My skincare routine was non-existent for the longest time. I mostly used one product for most of my childhood until my early adulthood. My routine was familiar and very simple: “Wash and go.” I constantly said, “If it ain’t broken, it doesn’t need fixing.” However, in my late teens, my “big girl” side emerged, and so did the desire to experiment with beauty products. Until my mid-twenties, I must say, I was blessed with good skin that didn’t break out, not even in my adolescent years.

However, one day, I suddenly began to notice changes in my skin. I started experimenting with different brands to find the “magic bullet.” However, the more things I tried, the more confused I was. How did I go from good skin to dehydrated skin? Suddenly, my bathroom became a graveyard for half-used products.

Sustainable Practices

My skincare journey taught me that what we put on our skin matters. Just as the earth absorbs the consequences of unsustainable practices, our skin absorbs the effects of harsh chemicals and environmentally damaging ingredients. Choosing to adopt a sustainable approach contributes to a healthier world.

Furthermore, reducing waste is crucial. Opt for reusable cotton rounds, solid shampoo bars, and refillable containers. Now, I support brands committed to zero-waste practices. Like reducing plastic in your daily life, reducing waste in your beauty routine makes a real difference.

Finding the right brands is essential. Conduct thorough research, read reviews, and seek transparency. Apps like Codecheck provide transparency on whether a product is harmful or healthy. Just scan and go. They provide the transparency we all need in the beauty industry. Remember, investing in eco-beauty is an investment in your health and the planet.
